Trees, Dynamics and Locally Compact Groups in Düsselforf
Last week a contingent from the Charlotte Scott Centre for Algebra at the University of Lincoln went to Düsseldorf, for the conference Trees, Dynamics and Locally Compact Groups that was held at Heinrich Heine Universität Düsseldorf.
I was one one of the invited speakers, and spoke about my construction (using groups acting on trees) of uncountably many compactly generated, simple, locally compact groups that are totally disconnected and nondiscrete that appeared last year in Duke Math. Journal.
Anitha Thillaisundaram gave a contributed talk on her work (joint with one of the conference organisers, Benjamin Klopsch) on the maximal subgroups and profinite completions of generalisations of the Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki branch groups.
Callum Burrows (a PhD student supervised by Anitha and me) attended too.
The conference was fantastic. The wonderful mini-courses, given by Phillip Wesolek (on tdlc groups), Zoran Šunić (on group tree shifts) and Volodymyr Nekrashevych (on topological dynamics and groups), intersected many of the research talks nontrivially, which meant that I got a deeper insight into those research talks that were outside my area. I left the conference feeling like I had learnt a great deal!
