Algebra Research Seminar: Talk by Melissa de Sousa Luiz (Campinas)

Melissa de Sousa Luiz (State University of Campinas (Unicamp), Brazil) visited the Charlotte Scott Research Centre for Algebra virtually. On 20 November 2024 Sousa Luiz spoke in our Algebra Seminar about her ongoing research on non-self-similar metabelian groups, reporting on recent developments jointly with Prof. Desi Kochloukova.

Title of the talk: Non-self-similarity of finitely presented metabelian groups

Abstract:
A group G is said to be self-similar if it is a state-closed subgroup of the group of automorphisms of the one-rooted m-regular tree, for some m. In 2004, Nekrashevych and Sidki produced a method for constructing self-similar groups based on the notion of virtual endomorphisms. On the other hand, in 1980, Bieri and Strebel defined a geometric invariant used to classify finitely presented metabelian groups. In this talk I intend to explore how, together with professor Dessislava Kochloukova, we combined virtual endomorphisms to the Bieri-Strebel invariant to obtain new results about the non self-similarity of finitely presented metabelian groups.
