The latest edition of the London Mathematical Society‘s Midlands Regional Meeting, followed by the Research Workshop “Groups in the Midlands“, was hosted from 17 to 20 June 2025 by the Charlotte Scott Research Centre for Algebra of the University of Lincoln.

Experts and young researchers gathered in Lincoln to report / learn about recent developments in Group Theory, covering a wide range of topics that are typically represented not only in Lincoln but by research groups across the East and West Midlands. The full programme, including abstracts for all presentations, can be found here.

The event was supported by an LMS grant secured by Yuri Santos Rego with additional financial support provided by Simon Smith‘s EPSRC grant.

The first day – LMS Meeting – was kicked off by the Chair of the LMS’ Education Committee, Mary McAlinden (Nottingham Trent University), who conducted Society Business.
Keynote speakers of the first day (LMS Meeting) were Francesco Fournier-Facio (Cambridge), Oihana Garaialde-Ocaña (Bilbao, Spain), and Simon Smith (Lincoln). The international workshop “Groups in the Midlands” had research mini-courses delivered by Oihana Garaialde-Ocaña (Bilbao, Spain), Simon Smith (Lincoln), and Stephan Tornier (Newcastle, Australia).

Prominent early career researchers from the Midlands Rudradip Biswas (Warwick), Anja Meyer (Loughborough), and Stacey Law (Birmingham) gave excellent research talks in the workshop, complemented by short contributed talks by Max Gheorghiu (University of Düsseldorf, Germany), Lukas Vandeputte (KU Leuven, Belgium), and Sofiya Yatsyna (Royal Holloway University of London).

There were multiple coffee/tea breaks during the event and lively mathematical discussions between participants, with a Society Dinner held at the evening of the first day in Lincoln’s historic city centre.
