Manuscript found in Brasilia (Brian Hartley’s unpublished note of 1994)

Thanks to Prof. Pavel Shumyatsky, an unpublished manuscript of Brian Hartley of 1994 was discovered, where he proves a nice result on bounding the Fitting height of a finite soluble group in terms of the order of the centralizer of an element. This problem remains open in general; in this note Hartley deals with the special case where the order of the element is a product of two prime-powers. Together with Alexandre Borovik we arranged to publish this note in Manchester University MIMS e-prints  http://eprints.ma.man.ac.uk/2188/01/covered/MIMS_ep2014_52.pdf
