Conference in Istanbul

In October 19–22 Evgeny Khukhro took part in the international conference BN-Pair (in honour of the 60th birthdays of Alexandre Borovik and Ali Nesin), where he gave the invited talk Elimination of operators in nilpotent groups

bn-conf-pica

The conference title is a nice pun about long-standing collaboration of Borovik and Nesin, and their research also involves BN-pairs (important construction in algebraic groups). But the first prize in this respect goes to the title of Katrin Tent’s talk  Sharp BN-pair of rank 1, which perfectly describes the subject (sharply 2-transitive group) but can also be applied to compliment the main protagonists of the conference! Both are prominent mathematical researchers and educators. Inter alia, Alexandre Borovik is a member of our School’s External Advisory Board and Ali Nesin is famous for running the Nesin Mathematics Village (where Borovik is one of the most active teachers).

The venue of the conference was the Boğaziçi University on the European bank of the Bosphorus strait.
